This album came out about the time I first went to Paris, near the end of 1989. I bought a cassette of it while I was there because I needed a little something “familiar” on hand to help me with the struggle of dealing with the language, trying to find out why I had gone at all, etc. And instead I found myself listening to Laurie Anderson singing…! Once the shock passed, I was really impressed with the range and quality of the lyrics—“Baby Doll” I’d heard years before when she’d performed it on Saturday Night Live, but “Ramon” really caught me. And “Coolsville” is to this day one of those tracks I can listen to 50 times in a row without getting tired of it…that is one seriously solid track with attitude to spare.
